Pool ionizers commonly utilize the concept of copper being an algicide and silver being a bactericide. Through an electrolytic process, silver and copper electrodes can be added to the pool to add these elements.
According to the WHO, the use of silver and copper ionizers can provide some level of protection against waterborne diseases. This shows that the technology used by these pool mineral systems is valid, and not just another product that's made from snake oil. However, there are still many technical limitations that prevent the use of these products in swimming pools.
One of the main technical limitations that prevent the use of ionizers in swimming pools is their inability to oxidize the water. This is a major issue for people who rely on these systems for their pool water. In order to effectively remove organic debris and chlorine, regular pool water oxidation is required.
Another solution that would work would be to use an ozone generator, but this would not protect the bathers as both the ionizer and the ozone system cannot hold a residual value in the water. Also, since the silver is not able to be measured, it's not possible to know if the water has the right amount of silver.
If you're worried about the copper levels in your pool water, you might want to use test strips. It's important to note that too much copper can lead to various staining issues in the pool.
The use of silver and copper ionizers can kill harmful bacteria. In addition, both of these elements have been used for centuries to purify water. Copper is a widely used agicide in the swimming pool industry, and it can effectively control algae growth.
If you're able to maintain a copper level of 0.2 to 0.4, this can help control algae growth and prevent staining in the pool. However, if the levels reach 0.5 to 1.0 parts per million, then staining is a more likely issue. Both silver and copper ionizers operate relatively easy and do not require much maintenance.
Using an ionizer with low levels of chlorine can help decrease the amount of chlorine you use in your pool, as well as kill algae. It is important to keep in mind that monitoring pool copper levels is required in order to prevent staining. However, if you want a system that uses the least amount of chemical sanitizer, then an ionizer might be the best choice.
Ionizers combined with salt water chlorinators are a good pairing since the former can provide chlorine, but it can also cause the pH level in the water to go too high. With the use of silver, you can improve the level of protection that one system provides. Unfortunately, chlorine is not as effective at killing harmful bacteria at higher pH levels.
Although ionizers can help decrease the amount of chlorine that you use in your pool, they can't completely eliminate it.
Ionizers require regular cleaning and replacement of their electrodes. Periodic maintenance is also required in order to maintain their effectiveness. They also require you to keep track of the copper levels in the water. Unfortunately, ionizers can't provide the four levels of safety that your pool water needs. However, they can still help decrease the amount of chlorine that you use.
